Ootbi v1.6 Released – Security, Management, and Monitoring Updates

Object First has released Ootbi version 1.6 (1.6.63.10886), introducing security enhancements, improved access control, and enhanced monitoring capabilities. This update further strengthens Ootbi as a secure and high-performance backup storage target for Veeam.

Security & Access Management

Stronger Authentication for IPMI & S3 Key Management

Enabling IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) or making changes to S3 keys via the Web UI now requires both password and two-factor authentication. This ensures that sensitive management operations, such as enabling remote management or modifying object storage settings, remain restricted to authorized users.

Refined Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)

New role-based access control enhancements ensure that backup and storage administrators can securely manage storage without unnecessary system privileges. The following predefined roles provide granular access control:

  • Administrator – Full access to the Ootbi cluster, including storage, networking, and system management.
  • Hardware Operator – Has full administrative control except for S3 and IAM access, allowing infrastructure teams to manage hardware while restricting object storage modifications.
  • Read-Only – Can monitor system settings via the Web Console but cannot make changes, useful for auditing and compliance.
  • Power REST Manager – Can manage the cluster via the REST API but cannot log into the Web Console, making it useful for automation or external system integrations.
  • Bucket Manager – Controls S3 bucket creation, deletion, and access management, allowing users to manage buckets in the cluster without giving them full control of the cluster itself.

Monitoring & Web UI Improvements

Syslog Support & Event Filtering

Ootbi now integrates with Syslog, allowing logs to be sent to external log aggregation or SIEM systems for centralized monitoring. Administrators can filter events by ID, selecting only the most relevant alerts for email and Syslog notifications. This ensures that only critical storage and backup-related events trigger alerts, reducing unnecessary noise.

Custom Free Space Thresholds

Backup environments—especially those handling large Veeam backup chains—often have high storage utilization. This update allows administrators to set a custom low-space threshold, preventing unnecessary alerts while ensuring proactive storage management.

New Storage Usage Chart

A Storage Usage chart has been added to the Monitoring page, providing a visual breakdown of storage consumption. This helps backup administrators track data growth, detect anomalies, and plan capacity upgrades.

TUI & S3 Server Enhancements

NIC Status Checks in Cluster Setup

The New Cluster/Join Cluster wizard now verifies that NICs are physically connected before allowing configuration. A warning is displayed if link speed is low, helping prevent backup performance issues related to network bottlenecks.

First Run Guide

The guided setup experience has been enhanced for new and unconfigured systems, ensuring that deployments are configured correctly from the start—reducing the risk of misconfigurations that could impact Veeam backup storage performance or security.

S3 Location Support in Bucket Creation

Ootbi now allows administrators to specify a Location field when creating S3 buckets. This feature is particularly important in environments where data may need to be localized to a specific Ootbi node in a cluster. Keeping backup data on a specific node helps:

  • Optimize backup and restore speeds by ensuring data locality.
  • Improve load balancing within the Ootbi cluster.
  • Reduce unnecessary data replication across nodes.

Ootbi & Veeam – A Secure and Optimized Backup Storage Solution

With its security-focused architecture and deep integration with Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, Ootbi continues to be an ideal backup storage target. The role-based access control, S3 optimizations, and monitoring enhancements introduced in this release further improve performance, security, and scalability for Veeam backup environments.
